Downloading and Installing Adobe Acrobat for Windows 95, 98 or NT
For Netscape Users
Before going any further, print this page!  You will be able to follow the instructions much easier if you have them printed!

To install Adobe Acrobat, you will need to successfully accomplish two distinct tasks:

  1. Download the Adobe Acrobat Software
  2. Install the Adobe Acrobat Software

This tutorial will help you with both tasks.

1.  Visit the following address:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

2.  Once you are on that page, scroll down until you see the 3 steps that will need to be completed to successfully download the software.    Each of the three steps are described below.

3.  Under the Step 1 box, you will see three drop down menus, one for Language, one for Platform and one for the Location nearest you.  Likely, if you are in the United States, the Language and the Location nearest you options are already correctly selected (with English for the Language and USA for the Location nearest you).  If that is true, then you will only need to deal with the Platform menu.

4.  Open up the Platform menu by clicking on the small, black, down pointing arrow.  A list of Operating systems should appear.  You will need to click on the operating system that matches your computer.  For example, if you are using a Windows 95 computer, select Win 95.  And, if you are using a Windows 98 computer, select Win 98.

5.  You will need to enter a Name and E-Mail address in Step 2.  You cannot download the software without entering that information.  To keep yourself from receiving e-mail from Adobe, be sure that the little white boxes next to Notify me about Adobe software and Allow others to send me special offers are unchecked, just like the example to the right.

6.  For Step 3, simply click on the red Download button.  The Step 3 box will tell you how large the file you're downloading will be.  In this example, the file size is 5.6 MB.  Using a 56K modem, expect this download to take approximately 30 minutes.
7.  After clicking on the red Download button, you will see the Save As... dialog box.  You will need to save the Adobe Acrobat software somewhere on your computer where it can be retrieved later.  If you're new to downloading, putting the file onto your desktop will allow for easy retrieval and installation.

8.  To save the file on your desktop, click on the little, black down pointing arrow to the right of the Save in: line.  You should see a list of locations on your computer.  Select Desktop off that list.  If you don't see Desktop as an option, then you will need to scroll up the drop down menu until you see Desktop.  It will be there as an option.

9. Once you have selected Desktop as your Save In: location, click on the Save button.

10. After you have clicked on the Save button, you should see the Saving Location window (as shown on the right).   Now, all you can do is wait... once this window disappears, the file will have been downloaded to your desktop and you can then go on to Install Adobe Acrobat.
Installing Adobe Acrobat
After you've downloaded Adobe Acrobat, quit your browser so that you can install the software.  Once you quit your browser (and any other open programs), you should see an icon (picture) on the desktop for Adobe Acrobat.  The icon should look like the example on the right.

1.  To begin the install process, double click the new icon on your desktop.  You will see two small windows as your computer prepares to install Adobe Acrobat.  The first one will be titled: Unpacking Acrobat Reader and the second one will be titled Setup.  You don't need to do anything at this point, just wait for your computer to finish these two steps.

2.  The Acrobat Reader Setup program should then begin.  To continue the Setup process, just click on the Next button at the bottom of the screen.   (Your only other choice is the Cancel button, but that would stop the Setup process...)

3.  The next step is the Choose Destination Location dialog box.  Unless you're very comfortable with computer folders (directories), then your best choice would be to simply click on the Next button.

4.  You will then see the Copying program files window while the program is installed.

5.  After a few moments (or more), you will see the window thanking you for installing Adobe Acrobat.  Click on the OK button.

Adobe Acrobat should now be successfully installed on your computer and you should be able to read all of the Tutorials available at ShortGuides.com
