Installing
the Michigan
State 2000 Tax Forms CD-ROM |
Installing and working with the state of Michigan 2000 tax
forms is quite easy, even if the instructions on the packaging make it
sound difficult.
There are three steps to installing and using the Michigan State Tax forms,
and they are:
-
Ensuring that you have the current version Adobe Acrobat
installed
-
Installing Adobe Acrobat, if needed
-
Creating a link to the CD on your desktop, or some other
convenient location
Really, that’s about it.
This ShortGuide will walk you through this process, step by step.
Which version of Adobe Acrobat do you have?
Adobe Acrobat 4.0 is included with the State Tax Forms CD-ROM
product, so that is the recommended version of the program to use.
I’ve honestly not tried to use the CD with an older version of
Adobe Acrobat, but if you’ve got a lesser version currently, you would
be better in most online situations to have the newest version
installed (that is, Adobe Acrobat 4.05).
There are many ways to determine which version of Adobe Acrobat
you have, but the instructions below are the most consistent method of
determining what you’ve got.
This will be painless. J
- Pull
up your Start menu and select Settings
- From
the menu that appears, select Control Panel
|

|
- From
the window that appears, double-click the Add/Remove
Programs icon.
|

|
- You
will then see the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.
In the list near the bottom of the dialog box, look for
any items that say Adobe Acrobat.
If you have an item that says Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0,
then you are just fine. It might read Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0, 4.01, 4.02,
4.03, 4.04 or 4.05 – all of which are just fine. In which case, you can just move on to the section of
this ShortGuide entitled Using the Michigan 2000 State Tax
Forms.
- If,
however, you have an item that says Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01,
then you must Remove the program before installing
Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0.
To remove the program, click on the Add/Remove button
near the bottom of the dialog box.
When prompted, answer “Yes” to all of the questions
that you are asked.
- Eventually,
you will see a dialog box that telling you that the uninstall
was successful.
|

|
Installing Adobe Acrobat 4.05
- Close
all of the programs that are currently running.
- Insert
the Michigan Tax Forms CD into the drive and double-click the My Computer
icon.
|

|
- You
should see an icon for the CD drive that reads: 001220_1502
[D:]. It is
entirely possible that the numbers will not match, but they will
be very similar.
- Double-click
the CD-ROM icon
|

|
- You
should see a folder icon labeled Acrobat.
- Double-click
the Acrobat folder
|

|
- There
will now be an icon labeled rs405eng
- Double-click
that icon to begin the installation process.
|

|
- From
this point on, you will be confronted with numerous dialog
boxes. The key to
success here is to continue clicking the Next button until the
program in successfully installed.
|

|
- Once
you see the dialog box thanking your for choosing Acrobat
Reader, the program will have been installed successfully.
- You
can now go on to use the Michigan State tax forms.
|

|
Using the Michigan 2000 State Tax Forms CD-ROM
Using the Tax forms is very easy, however, you must have the
CD installed in order to use them.
If you have a Local Area Network in your library, it is very
possible that you can share the CD with all of the computers on the
Network, although that does fall beyond the scope of this ShortGuide.
- Insert
the CD-ROM into the drive and double-click the My Computer
icon.
|

|
- You
should see an icon for the CD drive that reads: 001220_1502
[D:]. It is
entirely possible that the numbers will not match, but it will
be very similar.
- Double-click
the CD-ROM icon
|

|
- You
should see an icon labeled Main Menu. Point at the icon and click and hold your RIGHT mouse
button.
- A
menu should appear. On
the menu, select Send To.
- Another
menu should appear. On
that menu, select Desktop (Create Shortcut)
- This
will put an icon on your desktop that points to the State Tax
form Main Menu.
- Close
all of the windows and programs that are currently open.
|

|
- On
your desktop, you should have an icon that looks like the
icon on the right. Double-clicking
the icon will take you to the Michigan State Tax Forms main
menu. NOTE:
You may need to Accept the software license agreement
for Adobe Acrobat if you just installed the program.
|

|
- From
this menu, you can navigate to find any of the currently
available Michigan 2000 Tax forms.
